Vogel Law Firm Core Values Statement
Excellence and integrity in an atmosphere of respect and cooperation.
History of the Vogel Law Firm

The firm traces its roots back to 1880 when William Barnett came to Fargo to practice law. He hired Seth Richardson in 1905 and soon their partnership expanded and prospered. The Vogel family, through brothers Charles, Philip and Mart Vogel, became associated with the group in the late 1920's. They expanded the firm's practice into North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, providing a range of legal services.

Members of the firm have a long history of involvement in public service. Charles Vogel became a United States District Court judge in 1941. In 1954, he became North Dakota's first Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals judge. He was succeeded by another firm member, Myron Bright, in 1968. In 1998, a third firm member, John Kelly, was appointed to the Eighth Circuit bench. A fourth firm member, Kermit Bye, succeeded Judge Kelly in 1999. The firm is undoubtedly one of a few firms in the country to have had four of its members to serve as U.S. Circuit Judge. Another firm member, Beryl Levine, became the first woman to serve on the North Dakota Supreme Court. Several other partners have served in other prominent government positions such as Assistant Attorney General of the United States, United States Attorney for North Dakota and Attorney General of North Dakota.

The firm merged with Kapsner & Oliver, PC, of Bismarck on January 1, 2000. On January 1, 2004, the firm merged with the Gunhus Law Firm of Moorhead. The union of the three firms makes the Vogel Law Firm the largest law firm in the Tri-State area, outside of the Minneapolis Metropolitan area. The firm now has 43 attorneys.
